Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure.
Breathe is the essence of life but how often do we actually think about breathing? Probably rarely if ever. Most of us develop habits of shallow chest breath instead of the deep belly breathing we are designed for.
There are so many physical benefits to deep breathing it has been shown to lower or stabilize blood pressure, release tension and lower stress. Deep breathing has so many other benefits as well. When we take time to take deep breaths it reminds us to be present in the moment, encourages mindfulness and sharpens our mental focus.
I would like to introduce you to Box Breathing. It was created for Navy SEALS to use when they were in extremely tense situations. Set aside 5 minutes a day to practice this great technique. It can be done when driving, doing chores or resting in a comfortable position. Take time to do a few rounds before an important conversation, meeting or stressful task.
Simply think of a box or square.
Step one: inhale through the nose for the count of 4.
Step two: hold the air for a count of 4.
Step three: exhale through the mouth to a count of four, all the air should be exhaled
Step four: keep the lungs empty for a count of 4
Repeat for 5 minutes as often as possible. Once that feels natural and easy try increasing the time you spent on each step. It is amazing how different you will feel when you breathe properly.
Two Tips for mindfulness and balance
1) We are bombarded daily with noise, chaos and stressful moments. When the stress gets heavy take time for some Goode deep belly breaths and watch the stress and tension melt away.
2) Take time to breathe deeply today. Breath brings balance, mindfulness and peace to us.
“Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to
your thoughts. Whenever your mind becomes scattered, use your breath as the means
to take hold of your mind again.” – Thich Nhat Hanh
